Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from city government facilities and operations have decreased 10% since 2010 and 20% since 2005, even though the number of residents served by the city has increased. This decrease has been achieved through many efforts, including the provision of cleaner electricity to City facilities by San José Clean Energy, the conversion of streetlights to use LEDs, the City vehicle fleet switching to using 100% renewable diesel, the addition of electric vehicles to the City vehicle fleet, and the installation of 6.5 megawatts of solar panels on City facilities.

City staff data
City staffing data came from recent and archived adopted City operating budgets for the 2005-2006 through 2018-2019 fiscal years.
Data were not available to calculate 2005 emissions from generators, the City vehicle fleet, employee commutes, or grit, grease, and screenings from the Regional Wastewater Facility. Data were also not available to calculate 2010 emissions from CNG shuttle buses at the Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport. Finally, data were not available to calculate carbon sequestration by city street trees in either 2005 or 2010.
Margins of Error (MOE) are provided for every American Community Survey estimate. The MOE measure the possible variation of the estimate around the population value with a confidence level defined by the Census Bureau (standard – 90 percent).
